PHYSICIANS
IDC physicians are Board Certified in Infectious Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. They also may hold other certifications such Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, HIV Medicine, and Tropical Medicine.
![]() | Carlos J. Ruiz, MD, FACP, was the first infectious disease specialist in the Orlando area when he opened his practice in 1973 and he is also the founding physician of IDC. Dr. Ruiz received his medical degree from the National University of Colombia. After completing his Internal Medicine Residency in Cleveland, OH, he did his Infectious Disease fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in Miami, FL. Dr. Ruiz is also certified in Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicne. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and has served as Florida Hospital Orlando Medical Staff President. He has served as Chairman of numerous hospital committees and is a current Medical Director of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Florida Hospital. Dr. Ruiz is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Academy of HIV Medicine and the International AIDS Society. |
![]() | Jaime Carrizosa, MD, FACP, FIDSA, has twice been named by Orlando Magazine as Best Doctor for Infectious Disease, most recently in 2006. He received his medical degree from the National University of Colombia, and trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. Dr. Carrizosa is also certified in Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. He serves as the current Chairman of the Infection Control committee at Florida Hospital, and is a past President of the Florida Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Carrizosa is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Infectious Disease Society of America. He is also a member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, a founding member of the Pan American Infectious Disease Society, and a founding member of the Florida Infectious Disease Society. |
![]() | Timothy W. Cooper, MD, FACP, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret), joined IDC in 1997. Dr. Cooper, a native Floridian, had an extensive career in the US Air Force, including numerous overseas assignments. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; trained for Internal Medicine at USAF Keesler Medical Center, Biloxi, MS, and in Infectious Disease at Wilford Hall Medical Center, in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Cooper is certified in Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) and in Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine. Dr. Cooper serves as Medicine Section Chairman at Florida Hospital Altamonte, and is a member of the Leadership Committee. He is a former Infectious Disease Consultant to the Air Force Material Command Surgeon General. Dr. Cooper is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. |
| Fernando Alvarado, MD, MPH &TM, FACP, joined IDC in 2000. He received his medical degree from the Colombian School of Medicine in 1989, trained in Internal Medicine at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO and earned his Fellowship in Infectious Disease at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1997. Dr. Alvarado is a Master of Public Health & Tropical Medicine from Tulane University. He has extensive field experience in tropical diseases and malaria in Colombia, and attended the Diploma course of the B.-Nocht-Institut for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany, in 1992. Dr. Alvarado is certified in HIV Medicine by the American Association of HIV Medicine. He is also Board-Certified in Hyperbaric Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is currently most active at the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, FL. He also directs the IDC Travel Health Services offering travel required vaccinations and counseling, as well as immigration physicals. |

He received his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University of Health Sciences, Fort Lauderdale, FL; trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, in Stratford, and did his Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Sniffen has served as Affiliate Professor, Voluntary Faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and is a current Clinical Assistant Professor at the University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is certified in Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists, and currently serves as Chairman of the Infectious Disease Section, American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. |
| Christopher D. Cooper, MD, a thrid generation Floridian, joined IDC in 2004. He obtained his B.S. in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry and Anthropology at the University of Florida, trained for Internal Medicine and completed his Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Cooper is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. He is also certified in Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. Dr. Cooper was named a 2006 Distinguished Physician by the Florida Medical Association and has earned awards from Tampa General Hospital and the Florida Infectious Disease Society. Dr. Cooper participated in numerous research projects with the USF Research Unit , Hillsborough County Health Department. He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America, the Florida Infectious Disease Society, and the American Medical Association. |
| Naveed Hamid, MD, joined IDC in 2007. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Punjab University in Lahore,Pakistan. Dr. Hamid completed his Internal Medicine Residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, NJ, and did his Infectious Diseases fellowship at the Winthrop- University Hospital in Mineola, NY. Dr. Hamid has served as a consulting physician at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Brown Hills, NJ. He participaed in the Infection Control Commitee and Pharmacy & Therapeutics community while at Winthrop-University Hospital. Dr. Hamid has made presentations at national meetings and formal presentations to medical students. He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America, Florida Infectious Disease Society, American Society for Microbiology and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. |
